Statistically, Salvador was the second most dangerous city on my journey, with a homicide rate only slightly lower than Cali’s, in Colombia.
I arrived late one night and paid the high taxi fee from the airport to get to my hostel in the touristy neighborhood of Barra. You know how people love to go to none touristy places*? I would strongly advise against it in a crime-ridden city, at least during the night.
Barra is on the Salvador coastline, and feels much more like a small village than a city. I crashed as soon as I had a bed, over 9 months of travelling having drained most of my energy.
Once I recovered, Salvador would be an invigorating experience, and remains my second favourite city in Brazil.**
*Or think they do.
** Florianopolis takes first.
