What is the most contentious board game? A contentious question, but I believe monopoly holds the monopoly on contention. When it comes down to it, I think it’s because the fake money traded in monopoly suddenly becomes real when you are a part of the game. Nothing engenders conflict so much as money. So with that in mind, imagine a family poker game, played with real money. Poker played without real money is such a different game as to not be worth playing, so we played a tournament.
Now imagine that we don’t have time to finish the tournament, and it comes down to the remaining players reaching an agreement. One young lady who is the most competitive monopoly player I know, and an older businessman with decades of experience in negotiation (I wasn’t part of the negotiations having lost all my chips).
New Years eve. We almost missed the real show as we dealt with our own negotiation fireworks. Thankfully, a decision was reached. We walked out onto the cobbled steps of Paraty, the small town engorged with tourists, and watched an amazing blast show. I say blast show, because there was no foreplay, no suspense, the Brazilians seemed to light all the fireworks they had at once. It meant a shorter performance, but with a huge impact.
