Following the fall of Nazi Germany, many senior and less senior Nazi officials fled to South America. Most seemed to end up in Brazil. Some were hunted down. Some returned on their own. Some died in South America.
My first day in Sao Paulo was not successful. First I took a taxi from the airport to Hostel Paulista, only to be told that my reservation was not at Hostel Paulista, but at The Hostel Paulista. A fifteen minute walk with heavy bags under the Brazilian sun. When I arrived, the staff showed me to a room with four empty beds and told me which was mine. The staff spoke no English and only a little Spanish. I climbed in for a midday nap, looked up, and above me a swastika had been drawn in permanent marker. Some letters had been draw under it. I thought about complaining, but I could see it someone had already attempted to wash it away. I was also tired and had no idea how to say swastika in portuguese. My nazi welcome to the final country of my adventure.
