ESCAPE THE ORDINARY: The Missed Boat

Jul 15, 2016 | | Say something

It’s always cheaper to buy a ticket with no option for a refund, but not smarter. Uruguay hadn’t been on my original itinerary, but everyone had spoken highly of the country. I was told the Uruguayans were the hippy version of Argentinians. I had planned a day trip by boat to the coastal city of Colonia.

The night before, I was invited to join my hostel friends at a rock night in Buenos Aires with local bands. I restricted myself to two drinks and left early, just so I could be up and ready for my trip. So I was half-responsible. I couldn’t quite force myself out of bed when my alarm went off and had a fifteen minute snooze. Not sure if it made a difference.

I followed my phone to the port where my boat was due to leave. What I hadn’t realised was how long the port was. My phone just took me to the centre, and I was about a twenty minute walk away. A taxi in the traffic conditions wouldn’t have been any quicker. I got there just as my boat was leaving. Uruguay will have to wait for another day.
