The tango is an intimate dance, and with that intimacy comes an awkwardness in dancing with strangers. My first problem was deciding where to look. It is simple when you are cheek to cheek, you just look forward. But sometimes you’re heads are directly opposed. At that point it makes the most sense to look into each other’s eyes. Sensible but awkward. Looking away might be taken as rude and anti-social. A prolonged stare is intense, especially when you’re both holding each other so close. It feels as though you are constantly on the verge of kissing. I was just about adjusting to this intensity in my second lesson when my teacher explained how I was meant to lead my dance partner. Chest to chest. Pushing her chest backwards with my own puffed out chest. And I thought other latin dances were intimate…
