I was going to say that Colombians like to stare, but that isn’t true. In Barranquilla people stared at me, though I think that was because I was the only white guy there. In Medellin people like to stare right into your eyes, and not in a challenging way. So after Barranquilla and Medellin I felt like it was just a Colombian thing. But that’s not true, people don’t stare in Bogota, people don’t stare in Cali, people don’t stare in Pasto, and people don’t stare in Ipiales. And the stare I got in Barranquilla was more of a “what are you doing here?” kind of stare. Whereas in Medellin it’s more of a curious, “you look interesting” or “I’m just being friendly, Paisa’s stare,”* or “I am attracted to you”.
Travelling on the Metro station one day I noticed a beautiful girl staring at me, and after much nervousness and hesitation I introduced myself to Isabel and we were headed in the same direction. We had a lovely walk in the park before she had to go meet her friends to do a university project. Cristina, a girl I had dated in London and tried to convince to join me in South America decided not to come a few days later. Maybe that was a coincidence?
*Paisa is the Colombian term for Medellin locals
